Why I Developed Flutterstop: The Eye Safety Gap Lash Artists Can Finally Address

By Ashley Haight, Founder of FlutterstopTM

I want to talk about something that has been on my mind since new research drew more attention to the safety of lash extensions earlier this year.

Because if you care about your clients' eyes, and I know you do, this matters.

The Research We Cannot Ignore

A study presented at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Annual Meeting in 2026 reported that many lash extension wearers experienced ocular symptoms after their service. Clients reported:

  • Itching
  • Tearing
  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Burning

That finding matters. But what really stopped me was the silence around it. Many clients had not been given clear guidance about what they were experiencing, what might be contributing to it, or how to care for their eyes and lashes between appointments.

That is the gap I want to talk about today.

As lash artists, we are in the treatment room. We see the fluttering. We see the flinching. We see the clients who try so hard to stay still, even when their eyes simply do not cooperate. And we are the ones who can start changing the conversation.

First, Let’s Talk About What Is Actually Happening

Client wearing under eye pads and squinting from the bright light overhead

When a client is lying on your bed with their eyes closed, it can feel like the eye area is naturally protected. And in many ways, it is. A closed eyelid is doing an important job. It helps keep the ocular surface separated from adhesive fumes, ambient particles, bright treatment lighting, and other factors near the lash line.

The problem begins when that eyelid does not stay fully closed or remain still.

You already know this moment. You are in the zone. Isolation is clean. Your placement is exactly where it needs to be. Then the eyelid flickers. Or lifts slightly. Or the client tenses under the light, and the whole eye shifts.

In that moment, the controlled environment you thought you had can change.

That is not because the client is difficult. It is not because the artist is doing anything wrong. It is simply one of the realities of working close to the eye. For years, lash artists have adapted around this. We pause. We wait. We adjust. We reassure. We keep going.

But I do not believe we should have to keep improvising around a problem that can be better supported. This is not about scaring clients away from lash extensions. It is about understanding what is actually happening in the treatment room and taking a more considered approach.

The Eye Area Is More Sensitive Than We Give It Credit For

Optometrist and ocular health educator Dr. Janice Luk puts the importance of eye-area awareness into clear professional context:

"As an optometrist with a focus on dry eye disease and beauty trends, I'm always seeking products that support ocular health while delivering beauty services. Flutterstop™ is an innovative device designed to enhance safety around the delicate structures of the eye during lashing. Its thoughtful design reflects a growing awareness of eye health within the lash industry and represents an important step forward in elevating professional standards."

Her phrase "elevating professional standards" is exactly what this is about. Not alarm, not restriction, but elevation.

The structures around the eye, including the eyelid margin and the meibomian glands that help maintain the tear film, sit right in our working zone. They respond to the environment we create during a service. They respond to repeated exposure, movement, light, airflow, adhesive fumes, and eyelid behavior while we are working.

That means we have more influence over client comfort than many of us were ever taught to consider. And once you understand that, it becomes very hard to ignore.

Why I Built  FlutterstopTM

Lash Artist placing Flutterstop jelly pads on clients eyes

As someone who has worn lash extensions myself, I know exactly what it feels like to be the person on the bed with fluttery eyes:

  • The bright lights overhead
  • Someone working extremely close to your eye
  • Eyelids refusing to cooperate, even when you are trying your absolute best to stay still
  • That awkward mix of discomfort and embarrassment when you feel like you are making the service harder for your artist

That was the personal part for me. I wanted to create something that helps the client feel more settled and gives the artist more control. But the more I researched, the more I realized that comfort and eye-area awareness are not separate conversations. They are connected.

When an eyelid is fluttering, partially lifted, or not staying comfortably closed, the client may feel unsettled, and the service environment may become less predictable. Both of those things matter. Supporting one often improves the other.

Flutterstop™ was not created to add another step for the sake of it. It was created because the industry had been improvising around eyelid movement for too long.

How Flutterstop Jelly Pads Work

Flutterstop™ Jelly Pads sit gently on the upper eyelid. The weighted disc helps create a subtle, grounding pressure that encourages the eyelid to remain comfortably closed during the service. The light-reducing design also helps soften the effect of bright treatment lighting, which can be one trigger for involuntary eye movement.

And it does all of this without:

  • Touching the lashes
  • Using tape or adhesive on the upper eyelid
  • Interrupting the service

The goal was never to overcomplicate lash application. The goal was to make the treatment room feel calmer, more controlled, and more predictable for both the artist and the client.

After 37 prototypes and input from ophthalmology and beauty professionals, this is the design we landed on. Simple, deliberate, and built for the realities of the treatment room.

What This Means for Your Practice

Here is what I noticed in my own appointments after introducing Flutterstop™ Jelly Pads into my service:

  • The treatment room felt calmer
  • Clients relaxed faster
  • I was not pausing mid-isolation, waiting for an eyelid to settle
  • My placement felt more consistent because my working conditions were more consistent

But beyond the technical improvement, something else happened. Clients noticed.

When a client opens their eyes at the end of a service and says "I nearly fell asleep," or "I did not feel like I had to fight to keep my eyes closed," that matters. That is a client who feels genuinely cared for. That is a client who comes back. That is a client who tells their friends.

The artists who will lead the next stage of this industry are the ones who understand that the experience around the lash service matters just as much as the lashes themselves. Client comfort, eye-area awareness, professional hygiene, and service control are not extras. They are the service.

The Hygiene Piece You Cannot Skip

I want to mention one more thing because it directly connects to what we do in the treatment room.

Between-appointment hygiene is not optional. Build-up at the lash line happens between appointments, especially when lashes are not being cleansed consistently. That buildup can contribute to poor lash hygiene, discomfort, and irritation that clients may bring back to your chair at their next visit.

Every client should leave your chair understanding one thing clearly: lash extensions need to be washed twice daily with a professional-grade, pH-balanced cleanser.

For me, that is non-negotiable.

Flutterstop™ is its own tool, created to solve eyelid movement during lash services. For cleaning Flutterstop™ Jelly Pads between clients, I recommend Prolong Lash™ Cleanser. It has been tested for antimicrobial properties and is formulated for use around the eye area, which matters when working with a reusable tool designed for the lash treatment room. It is also the world's most clinically tested lash aftercare cleanser, formulated and tested for daily use around the eye area.

Anything used near the eye area should be chosen carefully, and I do not believe that standard should ever be negotiated down.

A Word on the Client Conversation

If there is one thing this research reminds us, it is that many clients are not getting the conversation they need. They may experience symptoms after a service and not understand what might be contributing to them. They may not realize that eyelid movement during application matters. They may not know that lash hygiene between appointments is part of supporting their comfort and results.

You are in the best position to change that. Not with alarm. With education.

When you place Flutterstop™ Jelly Pads at the start of a service, and your client asks what they are, that is your opening. You can calmly and confidently explain:

  • That you use a specialized eyelid stabilization tool to help keep the eyelid comfortably closed during the service
  • That it helps create a calmer, more controlled application environment
  • That you are paying attention not just to the lashes, but to the whole treatment environment

That conversation builds trust. Not because it frightens the client, but because it shows them that you have thought about the details they did not even know mattered. And that is the kind of reputation that brings people back year after year.

Built Around What Already Works

Lash extensions and technique are not the problem. The environment we create during a service, and the habits our clients maintain between appointments, shape the overall experience.

Flutterstop™ Jelly Pads exist to create an environment that is more controlled, more comfortable, and more considered for both the artist and the client. The growing clinical conversation about lash extension eye safety is confirming what many of us have long sensed: what happens around the eye during a lash service matters.

I am really proud of what we have built with Flutterstop™. Not because it is complicated, but because it is practical. It solves a real treatment-room problem in a way that respects both the artist and the client.

We are finally talking about eye safety, comfort, and professional practice in a more serious way. If you are reading this and thinking, yes, this is what I have been waiting for, welcome. You are exactly who Flutterstop™ was made for.
